Dale Hurst, Novelist

Sin & Secrecy was inspired by reading the classic works from the big 18th and 19th Century writers like Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Jane Austen, and watching adaptations thereof. I really wanted to write a story channelling my love for these styles and characters and language, but that placed them all in one common setting. I couldn’t tell you exactly what sparked the idea in the mind of a 15-year-old of four children conspiring to murder their headmistress, but that was the seed from which Sin & Secrecy and its prequel grew…

Nathan Emmanuel, Musician & Journalist

Initially, that was through university. In my final year, I had to make either a presentation or a mini documentary piece. Now, me being me, living outside the box, I didn’t just want to make that regular documentary-style kind of thing, and talk about my so-called financial issues during university. I wanted to make it different; I wanted to put it in a narrative form that people are more likely to connect with and engage with. Something different that catches their eye a bit more, and that’s what really inspired the rapumentary style…

Joe Quinlan & Kalem Brinkworth, Founders: The Bonbon Boys

The Bonbon Boys was founded by Joe Quinlan (left) and Kalem Brinkworth (right).

Kalem and I have known each other for eight years, and we’ve always wanted to do a business together. We have worked with each other in the past, so we know what one another’s styles are like. But it took us a while to figure out exactly what we wanted to do and what the product was. And so, during lockdown there was a lack of pick-and-mix — for two people who love sweets, that’s not very good…

Rick Walker, Artist / Creative Director

I have always loved drawing. I grew up in the late ’80s when people were really into hip-hop. Everyone wanted to be either a DJ, a breakdancer, or a graffiti artist. I was very bad for the two first ones, and actually quite good at drawing, so I got stuck to drawing. I got into graffiti at an early age and that’s what taught me that I had a passion for colours, typography, and illustration…

Zoltan Torre, Musician

Zoltan Torre, or just "zoltan." is a musician and singer based in Bournemouth

I always say that nothing particular inspired me to write this song. I just wanted to make something fun that gets you moving. I found the guitar loop that you can hear at the start of the song, and me and my friend Jake immediately started working on it. Even what I talk about in the song doesn’t really relate to me. I imagine it to be about a night out, meeting someone and having that tension between the two, all just happening on that night only; maybe becoming a one-night stand…

Matt England, Founder: Sun Rum

Sun Rum creator Matt England managed bars all over the country, including Bournemouth, before founding his brand.

About five years ago a friend and I went to a gin tasting evening and we were both at the point in our careers where we were both stable but were getting a bit restless with wanting to create something for ourselves; work for ourselves. So, I dipped my toes in spirits, manufacturing and retailing with gin and I loved the idea of it. But I felt the gin category was a very saturated market and I wanted to create something unique. I looked at a lot of data in regard to trends and other styles of drink and rum kept shouting out at me…

Liam Ulla, Founder: The Coacoara Foundation

I have always wanted to own a charity, or something that can give back, throughout my life, and be there when I’m not here as well. Last year, I was approached to do ‘Mr Dorset’, which means that you represent Dorset for England, and if you win you then represent England for the world. I met a lady who gave me the inspiration to really push for what I want, what I believe in and what I could do, and to set up the foundation…

Emma Gale, Singer-Songwriter

I always wanted to sing, so when I was like in my early teens I did something like the ‘gang show’ in Essex, where I come from, and that was the Scout movement. That was my first taste of being on the stage. Then I joined a local dramatic group and I did some shows and musicals when I was very young. I didn’t get into a band until I was 25; I started off as a backing singer in Cambridge for a covers band. Then I moved down here and set up my own band…

Shopping Experience Returns to Bournemouth and Poole

It’s fair to say that shopping online isn’t exactly an unfamiliar experience anymore. Since the birth of Amazon and eBay, more and more people have taken to shopping online. That being said, it’s clear to see that people have really missed the traditional shopping experience since the country went into lockdown back in March…
